I had a candidate who was working at a major tech company go in for an interview recently. His story is very similar to many these days. They downsized, ”RIF”, closed up shop and moved on. Like many others he did nothing wrong, it was just a business decision. But he felt it was more a statement of his self worth.
NOT TRUE!
He is an awesome candidate and he is in line now for many opportunities. He however engaged in some pretty serious self destructive behavior. He was at an interview and was talking about his old employer like an ex-girlfriend.
So the lesson…
I should have been more aware of this, though he gave me no indication at the time that felt anything of the sort. However, if you are a candidate here’s some thoughts.
Don’t talk about your ex on a first date…or at least don’t fixate on the old employer (and how you percieved they may have wronged you, disappointed you, etc). If you are asked about the RIF just be clear about facts and if things ended okay then say so. Remember your future is in front of you.
Be interest in the people, company and product or service. Opportunities for growth are still out there. Take advantage of them, use these as steps in your career growth.
There is life after (fill in the blank)!
